Breakfast is undoubtedly my favorite meal of the day. I always make it my mission to eat something nutritious that will set me going for the day and this recipe is perfect for that.

This is a recipe I've been meaning to try for ages. After seeing numerous versions of it all through my Instagram feed I decided to look it up and give it a go. I took the basis of the recipe from a blogger called The Healthy Chef, but decided to make it my own by using different fruit and taking on a bit of a lazy guesstimation method HAHA. This recipe was seriously so quick and easy to make. As well as working for a delicious brekky, the crumble-like consistency also makes it a great dessert option in my opinion.

What you'll need:

Oats
Desiccated coconut
Maple Syrup
Cinnamon
Strawberries
Raspberries
Blueberries

For the recipe I took an oven-friendly dish and prepped the oven at about 180 degrees. Next I lined the bottom of the dish with frozen raspberries, blueberries and a handful of strawberries. For the oat crumble I mixed about 200g of oats; 100g of desiccated coconut; a good sprinkling of cinnamon and around two to three tablespoons of maple syrup. Next I just placed the oat mixture on top of the fruit and put the dish into the oven for around 25 minutes. I probably should have left it for a little longer in order for the oats to brown a little but my impatience got the better of me. After this time in the oven the fruit had softened and was warmed through as well as the oats being a little toasted. Having the oatmeal warm served with greek yoghurt is delicious but also just as good cold.

What's good about this recipe is how easy it is to make your own. You can pretty much use whatever fruit you fancy. However, for fruits that are a little harder such as apples, I suggest maybe heating them in the microwave or on the hob for a little before bunging in the oven with the other ingredients. Or if you're a little less impatient than I am just leave the oatmeal in the oven for a longer period of time. You can also use alternatives such as honey for the maple syrup, or if you fancy it a little sweeter or crispier an addition like brown sugar to your oat mix is sure to do the trick. For me this recipe is all about estimating which is what makes it so easy because it's pretty difficult to get wrong. Another great thing is you can make a pretty big batch and it is likely to last you a couple of days in the fridge. This means if you haven't got half an hour to spare in the morning (which let's face it, who does?) you can easily make this the night before, leave to cool then store in the fridge. Savvy baking is the best kind!Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-52106385210087960282016-03-13T16:22:00.000-07:002016-03-13T16:35:18.103-07:00February

Yet another late monthly post - whoops! February has been yet another busy month for yours truly! This month saw semester two in full swing. I'm working hard to keep up with reading and essays this semester so that when it comes to final essays/exams i actually know what I'm doing. HOWEVER, this month hasn't been all work, there's also been a lot of play.

I took a day trip to Alnwick gardens - which to all Harry Potter lovers will be known as the setting for a certain Hogwarts. This was a really good trip and the gardens were a little different to your average stately home. With a number of interesting sculpture water features as well as a poison garden there's a few quite extraordinary things to see. The tree house situated in the gardens is also an interesting feature, containing a cafe and a restaurant. It's also incredibly cute - like something you'd find in a fairytale. Unfortunately the castle wasn't open to visitors at this time of year but this just means I'll have to take another visit.

Whilst in Alnwick we came across Barter Books - a famous second hand bookshop located in the old train station building. You could probably find any book you're looking for in there, as well as a few rare first edition copies. They even have first editions of Jane Austen which I won't lie made the literature student inside me squeal with excitement. Coming in at almost £7000 though this was a little out of my budget! I think the fact it is also in the old railway station gives it a bit of an edge.

This month i've also been working on my Uni cooking. I discovered this tortillia wrap pizza recipe from Lean in 15 which i think is aaaaaaaamazing. First of all i'd just like to say his Instagram account is top notch. Second, this pizza recipe is soooooo good. It's fast, it's easy, cheap and actually pretty good for you. As an avid pizza lover this is a win win for me. You just take a tortillia wrap, spread on tomato sauce (can use chopped tomatoes or any sort of tomato pasta sauce); bang on your veggies; crack an egg and you're good to go. I usually cook mine on 200 degrees for about 15 minutes. This means the egg comes out usually pretty hard but you'd have to play around with this depending on how you like your eggs. Just like any other pizza it's really versatile and your toppings can be literally anything you fancy. Definitely recommend! I've also been trying to cut back on sweets and choc which are my fatal flaw. This means I've been looking for other sweet treat alternatives. Dates and peanut butter are a favourite of mine at the moment. Easy, nutritious and satisfy that craving! I also recommend sprinkling with a bit of cinnamon.

This month also saw my first visit to restaurant and bar chain Revolution - or 'Revs' - as the local frequenters call it. I have to say I was impressed. It's a nice place to go for cocktails that are a bit whackier as well as the classics. My friend has a Rev card and we went on a Wednesday which is half price. This meant our meals were half price and cocktails were 2 for 1. A pretty good deal for students if you ask me! It's quite surprising that I had never been to a Revolution before considering they seem to be situated in most cities.

Lastly, this month also saw yet another trip to the seaside. I love it in all weathers and I am so blessed to live in a city so close by. Even though it's pretty chilly down by the shore this time of year I still appreciate it because it's so beautiful!

Moving out and looking after yourself for the first time is hard, right? Cooking and cleaning for yourself along with juggling 9-5 uni and Netflix binges can seem difficult at times. But now you're thrown out into the big wide world without Mum's cooking to come home to every night. I've always been into my food. I'm not a fussy eater, never have been, never will be. But when it came down to considering what I was going to fuel myself with at Uni I gave it some great thought. It's really important to me to look after my body and get all the nutrients I really need, (or at least try). However, i'm a student and I needed to figure out a way of eating well without breaking the bank. Here's what i've learnt so far:

1. Stock up. Stock up all the stuff you know will sit in your cupboard and last for months on end. Chopped tomatoes - great to throw in some veggies to make a nice easy tomato sauce. Baked beans - one of my main University food groups. Don't know what to eat? Bread and baked beans you're sorted. It's a classic university food but it's so comforting, quick and easy. Pasta sauces are also a great thing to stock up on. If you've no dinner inspiration put on the hob and boil some pasta and you're good to go. Aldi do some amazing pasta sources so if you're close to one I suggest getting down there and trying some out. The tomato and mozzarella sauce is a 10/10. Porridge oats are another big thing for me. I loooooove porridge. So easy and tasty! As well as being cheap as chips. Porridge is also a great foundation to add fruit to - another quick and easy way to making sure you're getting all the goodness your bod needs. My personal favourite is banana porridge. Deeeeelicious. A bag of porridge and a bunch of bananas my brekky is sorted for a week. I also recommend stocking up on seasoning at Uni. They help make the same old more interesting. My staple seasonings would be basil, pepper and chili flakes. Cinnamon is also good especially for things like porridge.

2. Your freezer is your new best friend. I've never appreciated the brilliance of food preservation as much as I have since starting University. I buy some of my fruit frozen so it lasts longer; this also goes for meat and fish. I even freeze my bread. I'm somebody that likes a variation but I always find I forget about things and by the time I get around to eating it it's gone off. Hard times. The freezer is also great for storing leftovers. Whenever I make something like a sauce or a pasta bake i'll make a batch of at least two servings. It makes deciding what to eat so much easier and more cost effective!

3. Flexibility. I find it gives you so much more option if you make your meal staples things that can be cooked in a number of different ways. Potatoes are a perfect example. Sweet potatoes are my personal preference. Mashed, baked, roasted even in wedges. In fact sweet potato wedges and ketchup are my weakness.

4. Variation is key. Nobody wants same old every single day, it's boring and you quickly lose interest. Each food shop i'll mix up the veggies I want for that week. I also do this with the main part of my meal. I'll buy a different kind of meat, or as the examples above show sometimes i'll go for something different. The pictures above show spicy bean burgers (Tesco's own and i'd highly recommend) and also the leek and cheese lattice. These are great things to bung in the freezer and come back to in a couple of weeks time to keep mixing up what you're eating.

5. Snacking. Snacking is an important part of my day. I keep yogurt as an easy go-to. I'm also really trying to not reach for the biccies all the time. Dates and peanut butter are a new sweet favourite of mine. Not to everybody's taste I know that, but if you enjoy the fudgey loveliness of a good old date this is a great alternative when you want a sweet treat. Dates are also great because you can buy a bag and they'll keep for a long while without the worry that they'll go bad.

So these are some of the lessons i've learnt when it comes to eating at Uni!

Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-40217667413940730342016-02-21T03:23:00.000-08:002016-03-13T16:36:18.452-07:00January

Ok so this is kinda late and should have been posted a month ago - whoops! Despite this i'm still going to post it because I'm adamant to do one of these round-ups every month - or at least try!

The end of Christmas saw us students catapulted into revision and new semester madness. January was filled with Uni mayhem, with the exam period stretching throughout most of it. I love my course though and Uni work never seems that much of a chore. At least that's what I told myself amidst the last minute revision crams. It was also bitterly cold up North, with my hometown experiencing some snow - this i'm very jealous of. One of the above pictures is one my Mum sent me of our beautiful collie Billy sat in wintery prettiness. Amid revision I made it an aim to have breaks and enjoy myself. One of these breaks included a meal out with flatmates and a very delicious sticky toffee pudding. I'm also continuing to explore what the city has to offer breakfast-wise. If you couldn't tell by now it's definitely my favourite meal.

In other news I'm trying to get back into looking after myself and eating better! I can either be really good at this or be overcome with my really unhealthy chocolate addiction. I always seem to be able to justify revision as a reason to let my healthy eating go a little, or a lot. Avocado and egg on toast is one of my healthy meal attempts. I love avocado so I guess it's a good job it's healthy. I also rediscovered my adoration for 9 Bars. These are so goddamn good I can't even! White girl cliche or what? Seriously though these are goooood. The carob coated ones are my favourite because it's a relatively healthy choc fix. The downside to these is that they're kinda pricey and hard to justify on a student budget so I guess these will just stick to being my indulgent health treat.

Now to focus on the top left hand corner picture. Yeah the dark blurry one that you can barely see. Maybe the lack of lighting made this impromptu restaurant bathroom photo opportunity idea a bad one. However I just want to rave about that camel coat to everyone all the time. It's definitely one of my best purchases of late. Camel coats are a classic and in my opinion are an easy way to dress up an ordinary jeans and t-shirt outfit. This little number was a steal from the recent Zara sale and it's safe to say I'm going to get plenty of wear out of it.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-65743703402576646252016-01-23T14:42:00.006-08:002016-03-13T16:36:31.773-07:00Winter Skin Saviours

I appear to have taken a little hiatus due to January exams but they're nearly over and I'm getting back into writing posts. I decided it would be a good idea to talk about how I tackle winter skin. Up here in Northern England it is freeeeeeezing at this time of year - we've even experienced snow! Though I do admit i enjoy winter, it definitely takes it's toll on my skin.

My skin type is dry and as a result I have very little oil on my skin and often feel the need to compensate. I used to use products in my skincare routine that were just too harsh for my skin and resulted in stripping away what little oil my skin had - not something I needed to do. EMBRACE THE OIL. I seemed to have this idea that stripping my skin back would help my skin, how wrong I was. As I got a bit older I began to make changes in my skincare routine to suit my dry skin type. Now my skincare routine consists of using very little water on my skin (something I find dries out my skin even more). To cleanse I now use the Nivea Cleansing Milk for sensitive skin - a favourite of both me and my Mum. My next step is the Bodyshop Chamomile Cleansing Oil, which let me tell you is so great and gentle. I do this for a second cleanse partly to make sure all make up is removed, partly to pamper myself. I remove this with a damp flannel or muslin cloth run under warm water. I find these steps remove any need for water and avoid from removing any access moisture in my skin, Next I like to tone my skin. Now I have two choices for this. I'll either use the Garnier Micellar Water - which I find is a great step in making sure all the cleansing oil is removed and freshening up my skin. If I want something a little stronger, say my skin isn't looking too sponny or I have a few blemishes i'll use the Clinique Clarifying Lotion in 1. I'm an avid lover of the Clinique Three Step Skincare system and though I tend to use that moreso in the summer months, the clarifying lotion helps my skin throughout the year. It's good at cleaning the skin but isn't too harsh so that it strips away too much.

Next moisturisation. The most important step! I've recently fallen in love with Clarins and their HydraQuench range. It smells amazing, feels amazing and does well a brilliant job. First i apply a couple of pumps of the serum onto my skin, then the HydraQuench moisturiser. This is great at locking in and putting moisture back into my skin. It's also really comforting for those days your skin is super dry. I also like to use the HydraQuench mask about once a week on a Sunday. This is sooooo good and honestly I've had it on my face all day before and it just kept up the mositure levels in my skin a treat. Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream has been my saving grace over the last few years. The stuff is great to slap on before bed. I tend to do this when the weather gets colder and just before i feel my skin becoming too dehydrated. A night of this and my skin is comfortable and back to normal, despite the fact it makes you look like a shining beam. It's also great for dry lips and works as a really heavy duty balm. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. Lastly is day creams. I switch between two: the Nivea Light Day Cream and the Boots Simply Sensitive Protecting Day Moisturiser. I have to say, I do prefer the Boots moisturiser. The Nivea one is more mattifying, possibly because it is advertised for normal and combination skin. A while back I had a number of dry patches on my face and my Mum recommended the Nivea moisturiser to me. It did a brilliant job of clearing up the dry skin I just feel like now it's winter my skin needs a bit more of a drink in the morning. I tend to throw the Nivea one in my bag for use after the gym as it isn't as visible on the skin. Lastly I also use the Clarins HydraQuench tinted moisturiser which helps my skin in giving it that extra moisture boost throughout the day.

Finally, the simplest and cheapest way of keeping your skin hydrated - water. Sometimes I forget just how much of our bodies are made up of the stuff. Drinking more water is something i'm trying to do to keep me healthier and more hydrated both inside and out!

So, 2015 is over and we welcome in 2016. 2015's closing month has been a long and exciting one. From my birthday celebrations to festive togetherness with friends and family this has been a great end to an eventful year.

As always, this month has been one of dressing up and hitting the town. Flats have been my new go-to shoe, especially pointed lace-ups. I lusted after a pair when they first hit the shops a few months back and finally settled on this pair shown above from ASOS. They're my ultimate faves for going out because they are just so darn comfy and easy to wear. This pair are also patent which makes life so easy. I cannot even begin to talk about the spilt drinks and sticky dancefloors that have resulted in the end of the road for many a pair of my shoes. Now I can just wipe these clean and they're like new. Genius! As well as convenience I'm also really into the way these shoes will go with practically everything. I really like the stylish touch they give to whatever I'm wearing and It's safe to say I am obsessed.

Mid December brought a very exciting time for me. After being a fan for years, I finally got to go and see Mumford and Sons during their Wilder Mind tour. After following the band and purchasing album after album this was a long time coming. I was not disappointed and as expected, they were amazing live. An arena full of adoring fans and the belters including the classic 'Little Lion Man' made for a great atmosphere and an unforgettable night.

This month has also meant a lot of Uni work with the run up to exams in January. I'm studying Classics and English Literature which has meant a lot of reading and a lot of essay writing. Not forgetting the many 'breaks' that quickly switch from "I'll just watch this one YouTube video..." to a whole day of Netflix binging - whoops! All moaning aside I'm really lucky to enjoy my course and despite the many hours of hard work it entails, I am really pleased that I have enjoyed my time at University so far.

The rest of December also saw a number of celebrations in the run up to Christmas, as well as a flatmate's birthday. To celebrate we opted for bowling. It's had been a while and my bowling technique is definitely not on top form which resulted in a loss for me! Despite my terrible hand-eye-coordination this was a really fun time. I feel like I always forget how much fun bowling can be and I'm going to make it my aim to do it a lot more during 2016.

Stan Smiths; a classic in the world of shoes. These babies are my new found obsession. Since starting University, the need for sensible shoes became apparent to me so I decided to invest in a pair of these bad boys.

Trainers never used to be a big thing for me. I saw them as solely a fitness necessity until one day I had an epiphany and purchased a pair of black Nike trainers for casual day-to-day wear. It's fair to say that pair of trainers are my most loved and most worn shoes.

The thing I love about trainers is the comfort, convenience and versatility. They're great when i'm on my feet all day and as pictured above I can wear them paired with pretty much anything, be it jeans, dresses, skirts. It's a great and effortless way of pairing down a slightly smarter outfit or polishing off a casual jeans and t shirt ensemble. It's very easy to understand how sport luxe has had a heavy influence in fashion over the past few years. After seeing these kicks on the likes of Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner to Doutzen Kroes and Sienna Miller, it's obvious these are shoes that can be adaptable to any and every style.

Though these shoes did rub my feet to ruin and I may have gone through a whole box of plasters trying to break them in - hey no pain, no gain am I right? - these shoes are a great addition to my wardrobe and I imagine will be loved and cherished for a long time to come.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-56330897953274778812015-12-12T03:53:00.000-08:002016-03-13T16:37:46.782-07:00Coconut Banana Bread

Baking is one of my favourite things to do and i love finding ways to incorporate slightly healthier alternatives into my baking portfolio. Banana bread is a great dessert that is slightly healthier due to the high banana content needed to make it.This makes it a great way to indulge without the guilt! Here is a recipe i found for a coconut banana bread which uses coconut as a substitute meaning you don't have to use as much sugar as an ordinary recipe would require. The recipe also uses Greek yoghurt, which works as a binder and makes the bread taste extra creamy and indulgent. This recipe i have tried and tested a number of times and is now my go-to banana bread recipe!

The recipe:
245g of plain flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
3 large ripe bananas to be mashed (the riper the better in my experience!)
85g cup of brown sugar
3 egg whites
1/2 tablespoon of olive oil
30g of Greek yoghurt
50g of flaked coconut plus 2 tablespoons to use later for decoration

I edited the recipe a little bit to my own preferences which is something you can do too. As well as these ingredients above i added chia seeds for a crunchy addition and i just guesstimated the amount i added to the batter. If this is something you're interested in adding i'd suggest a cup would do the trick! You could also maybe add blueberries, raisins or if you like extra sweetness some honey would also do the trick.

1. Heat your oven to around 180 degrees celsius.
2. Mix your flour, baking powder and baking soda together.
3. In a separate large mixing bowl combine your mashed banana (to do this you can just use a fork) and brown sugar. Now mix in your egg whites and then the oil. Next mix in your yoghurt and then add in the 50g of coconut. This is the point where i also added my chia seeds.
4. Next line a loaf tin with grease proof paper and grease the paper with a little butter. Next pour in your batter and sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of coconut on top.
5. Next pop your loaf in the oven for about 50 - 60 minutes.

To serve i added more greek yoghurt - i love the stuff; along with frozen raspberries and an extra sprinkle of chia seeds.

I'll link the website where i found the recipe, which also included loads of other alternative banana bread recipes:

Just like every other gal at the moment, i love rose gold. That isn't however the only reason i love these two products. Though the packaging of both of these products does bring heart-emojis to my eyes, they're both fabulous for the reasons i'm about to give.

Upon hearing that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley had released a new fragrance for Marks and Spencer's i went on a hunt to track it down. I knew from first sniff that this would soon be a new favorite. To me it is reminiscent of another favorite of mine - the cult favourite "Chloe" and smells exactly like rose lemonade (which is probably why i love it so much) and makes sense seeing as the packaging notes how it contains "bright lemon essence" and "red rose." As well as smelling like heaven on earth, this perfume is long lasting and at £14 for 30 ml you can't really go wrong in my opinion. For any of those currently searching for a lovely Christmas prezzie for a loved one the fragrance gift set featuring the perfume, a candle and a body lotion is currently £12.50 at Marks and Spencer's - go go go! Additionally there's also another version of this fragrance that has been recently released - the "Nuit Parfum" which takes a similar scent to this, yet has a more of a sensual twist.

The other product i want to discuss is also very exciting! I recently received Charlotte Tilbury's K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in "So Marilyn" as a gift. It is well known amongst my friends and family that i am a red liptick lover! Having tried a number of red lippies this one has to be the most luxurious one i own to date. This is definitely something i noticed in the product's quality. It's smooth and a lovely pigmented colour. The packaging also claims to include lipstick tree extract. Now if you're anything like me you'd look at this claim with a baffled expression and then go do some research. After undertaking said research i discovered this "lipstick tree" (also known as Bixa orellana) was apparently used originally by humans as a red body paint and lipstick - giving the tree it's name. The extract is said to have been used as medicine for a number of different problems and is also said to soothe skin. That's one thing i admire about Charlotte Tilbury products. The fact that all her products contain ingredients to care for the skin is something that in my opinion is so important and really helps in adding justification to the high price tag. Though the shade may be daunting for some, i find it really versatile. Whether i want a stain or a full on red lip i find this does the trick. I also really like it because i don't find it drying. Other lipsticks such as MAC's famous "Ruby Woo" i find to often be quite drying on my lips but this is not something i found with this one.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-3359969745961695462015-12-04T09:24:00.000-08:002015-12-05T05:10:20.357-08:00November

November has been a fun month. Having recently moved to University, i'm still settling into my new city and exploring everything it has to offer. As the pictures above exhibit, much of my discoveries were food based (the best kind).

I visited something completely new to me, the Gin Festival. Upon discovering this in freshers week with my also gin loving flatmate and now gin buddy, we decided to buy a ticket and give this a go. Basically this festival travels around the country offering ticket holders a chance to sample gins at four different themed bars. One for international gins, two for British-based gins and one (which was my favourite) for fruit infused gins. Upon arriving at the venue everybody is given a rather lovely gin glass with which you use to travel around the bars choosing your gin and then topping up with your tonic of choice. Next you purchase gin tokens which you then use to purchase each drink. During this festival I discovered a new favourite of mine Edinburgh Gin Raspberry Liqueur. I also discovered a new favourite luxury tonic - Fever Tree, who sponsored the event. This tonic is lovely and claims to offer a natural way to enjoy tonic. Good news for all health conscious G & T lovers. This was a really fun experience and a great treat for gin lovers alike! I'm hoping this was my first of many visits.

The rest of my month was filled with discovering a new brunch place as well as altering to life as a University student, meaning I actually have to think up meals and cook for myself - how do we cope? As you can see above my creations haven't been too interesting but tasty nonetheless. I'm all about the quick and easy. This month I also made the discovery of Marks and Spencer's Pitta crisps which are my new treat and I seriously need to refrain from eating the whole bag in one sitting.

Last but definitely not least Christmas is on the way!!!! The Christmas food markets have been set up in the city and walking through them is a very cruel thing to do to myself. Resisting temptation to return for more churros as we speak.

Breakfast is one of the best times of the day and porridge has to be one of my favourite foods, that may seem peculiar but true! There's nothing more comforting on a cold winter morning than a nice big ol' bowl of porridge and a brew. However I like to put a spin on what a lot of people perceive to be a boring brekky.

I find breakfast bowls to be the easiest way for me to gain a nutritional and filling start to my day. First we'll start with the beloved porridge, two of which are featured in the picture above. I just use a bag of ordinary porridge oats that I heat with water - or you can cook it with milk if you'd prefer, but I usually tend to cook mine with water and then add a splash of milk afterwards. For this I like to use either coconut or almond milk. If I have time in the morning I'll cook up some quinoa before adding my porridge oats to the saucepan. This takes about fifteen minutes and adds a lot of extra nutrition to my porridge. Now for the fun part. To spruce up my porridge I like to add anything from fruit, to nuts, to chia seeds, maple syrup and even a sprinkling of cinnamon. Changing it up means I don't get bored of the same-old and also allows me to get a lot of healthy stuff into my breakfast too - which is something I focus on.

As the lower left corner picture shows, I also like to make smoothie bowls. I tend to use frozen berries and I'll whiz these up in my blender and pour into a bowl. I like to do the same thing in terms of adding additional tastiness to my smoothie bowl. I especially like to sprinkle a granola or muesli on top. The picture above shows one of my faves: Primrose Kitchen Raw Beetroot and Ginger Muesli.

This outfit, based around a simple white sheer blouse and black leather mini is one i would generally tend to wear to a little more dressy occassion. This is the sort of outfit i would deem perfect for me on a night out or for a meal with the girlies or a similar occasion of some sort. I like it. It's simple and easy yet isn't boring.

I'm the sort of person who pays attention to comfort and practicality and the cobalt blue pumps from Matalan that i have paired with this outfit very much follow this line of thought. Although i love wearing heels as much as any other girl (especially seeing as i'm pretty short) i also like to wear pumps as a bit of a change when out and i love these for both their practicality but also the fact they are gorgeous and it was literally love at first sight. I'm very much a pumps girl i find a good pump can totally change the whole sort of dynamic of what you're wearing. Pointed pumps are also a new obsession of mine. Very 60's. I like how they add a smartness to what you're wearing. I love the pretty blue with this outfit; it adds interest to the monochrome theme. I also paired it with my trusty gold sequin clutch bag. I've had this for years and it's never failed me. I love sequins and the shoulder chain that fits inside it makes life easier when you seriously cannot be bothered carrying it as a clutch bag or you're just plain forgetful and clumsy - it helps avoid the fear of losing all your wordly possessions, especially if you're me and bring literally the whole contents of Mary Poppins' bag on a night out or when you inevitably have to take responsibility for all of your friends' stuff.

The actual act of applying make up and developing skills is probably what I love most about it. When I got to the age where I really began to take a proper interest in make up and my era of matching my beloved blue eyeshadow with bright pink lip gloss had passed I began watching endless make up tutorial videos on YouTube, discovering new aspects of make up and different products.

Eyeliner has always been something I really liked and paid close attention to. I think i first saw it as a tween on Taylor Swift. I am a particular fan of the cat eye flick and it's my go-to eye look when going out. I find that it's very flattering and is something everybody can pull off. Though it takes aaaaaaaages to get the hang of (something I'm still working on after years of trying) it does gets much easier and then you can experiment with exactly how thick you want your line and how to achieve the perfect feline flick for your eye.

There's many different types of liner and for a newbie it can get rather confusing. For an everyday look I usually tend to wear a simple line of gel eyeliner across my top lashes using a slanted liner brush. I don't really tend to do anything more dramatic in the day and so i don't go into a flick. I find because my lashes are quite short and flat a simple line really helps in making them appear a little thicker and fuller. When i want a bit more of a dramatic look and go for a winged-out cat eye effect i always find it easier to use a liquid pen as it's easier to have control and be more precise with your line. A top tip I've recently learnt in my struggle for the perfect flick is to first draw your flick in line with the line of your bottom lashes; almost like you are continuing the line upwards and then go in and draw the line on your top lashes, joining it up with your flick. Drawing your flick this way ensures that it is perfect for your specific eye shape. I'm not very good at explaining so I'll link the video i got this trick off:

The pictures I've posted below is a classic example of my take on the cat eye. Using Soap and Glory's Supercat liquid liner for my winged line with a simple brown kohl pencil along the bottom lash line. In terms of eyeshadow I've gone quite minimal, using 'Faint' from the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette in my crease and 'Smog' from the same companies Naked palette in my outer corner, which i have also taken along the lower lash line to smoke the look out a bit. To top off the eye I have used Benefit's They're Real mascara along the top and lower lashes.

Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-90857312491850921772014-02-08T13:15:00.000-08:002014-06-18T15:00:01.837-07:00Turtle. So recently i've had a bit of an obsession with turtleneck jumpers, polo neck, roll-neck - whatever terminology you prefer to use.

With the cold weather, this eternally classic item (which according to Wikipedia apparently dates back to the 15th century) has been a huge staple for me at the moment. Ideal for warmth and adding a smart sophistication that goes with pretty much everything; from a classic pair of skinny jeans to a skirt and ankle boots the turtleneck is definitely ideal for winter.

Recently i purchased a few jumpers all in one go. A black; a burgundy; a beige and a woolly knitted edition. It's been a good way to change up my wardrobe and since then i've pretty much been alternating between each one.

The burgundy jumper i bought recently from good ol' ASOS.

As i'm quite petite i've gone for cropped versions as i tend to match with high waisted bottoms whether this be a skirt or jeans as i find it tends to look better with my proportions as a shorty. I also really like turtlenecks for the smart element they bring and i always feel a bit more put together. They really easily dress up a pair of skinnies and ankle boots - add my beloved leather jacket and I'm good to go. As well as casual I've also been wearing them a lot when I go out at night. I'm OBSESSED with a turtleneck matched with a really dressy skirt plus they are majorly comfy and keep you from freezing whilst being stood outside waiting for your taxi that should have arrived half an hour ago.

I'm not really sure what brought on this sudden fad i seem to have attained for turtlenecks, apart from the fact it's a classical item and i tend to gravitate towards timeless fashions with my wardrobe. I have a feeling this is another way in which i am trying to imitate Alexa Chung's style. It's also a trend I've been seeing a lot recently on the likes of Millie Mackintosh, who i find dresses well and is often somebody I look to for inspiration. My music taste has a big impact on my life and being a major fan of Miles Kane probably has something to do with it too. Also, whenever I'm in my black jumper I feel like I belong in the Beatles.

This is definitely a trend that is here to stay probably forever, especially in my wardrobe.

I decided to take a picture of some of my favourite things and interests as an introduction to me. Everything you see above is like an escape to me. I love getting lost in stuff. Make up, clothes and reading. They're all pretty much like hobbies to me. That sounds a little sad really haha but once i find things i love they become my favourite things and what i pretty much immerse myself in.

Burt's Bees have quite a substantial collection of lip balms, many of these ranging from tinted to your basic balms. All of the balms are made with 100% natural ingredients which is another added bonus
The above lip balm was the first from Burt's Bees that i tried, and i was not disappointed. I really like the slight tint it gives your lips. It works great as a little pick-me-up and adds a little colour to your face.
I find this balm to be quite matte. The colour is really pretty and isn't too intense straight away, starting at a sheer tint that can be built up for more of a solid colour.
This balm is a little different from the other balms from Burt's Bees. I find the texture of this one to be a little bit more like a lipstick. It's quite shimmery and i also really like the colour of this one too. One of the ingredients in this balm is peppermint oil, and this makes this balm a real winner for me. I really like minty balms as i feel they are quite refreshing and can also help to perk you up a little during the day.

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm.

So this balm is the original Burt's Bees balm. It has no added tint unlike the others, however, that does not mean it is not just as nice as the others! This balm also contains peppermint oil which i really like about it as it's really refreshing. As i find with all Burt's Bees lip balms, this is very moisturising on the lips, due to their main ingredient, beeswax which is known for it's moisturising and healing properties for the skin. It's also quite light and doesn't feel heavy or sticky at all.

If you haven't tried Burt's Bees lip balms before, i highly recommend that you try them! They have many variations of colours and types of balm which is great because there is always something to suit everyone.
This desgin, first made poular in the 1600's throughout Europe, is an artistic style that uses detail to create drama and to add the impression of exuberance and grandeur. Examples of this style can be seen in furniture, architecture, interior, fashion and many other forms of art.

Baroque on the runway. Below i have picked out some of my favourites from various A/W 2012 collections.

Baroque designs seen in Dolce and Gabbana's A/W '12 collection

Dolce and Gabbana seem to be taking the approach of a monochrome background whilst letting the baroque detail take center stage.

Baroque designs seen in Alexander Mcqueen's A/W '12 collection

As seen by Alexander Mcqueen, a different view point of baroque is shown through extravagant colours being one of the main view points with more discreet detailing.

Queen Elizabeth I

Many of the baroque designs seen today are reminiscent of designs and colours seen back in the 1600's. Worn by famous historical figures and certainly a thing that many people, such as Queen Elizabeth I are recognised for. The baroque embellishments and clothes oozed extravagance and wealth, letting all know the importance of the wearer.

The baroque trend is a style i am personally glad to see back in fashion. The trend is something a little different, but yet adds interest and glamour to outfits. This is a trend i am definitely looking forward to seeing incorporated into the high street, and if what can be viewed on the runways is anything to go by we're in for a treat!
With the recent release of the Aubin and Wills Autumn 2012 collection we see the quintessentially British brand again impress us with it's sophisticated take on Autumn fashion.

With Sophie Dahl and Andre Van Noord taking their turn to represent the brand, the theme - as seen in the video, seems to be based upon a whimsical-like forest backdrop. The clothes seen in this collection are suited to Autumnal style with the shades being a reflection of colours that could be sighted in a wood during a stereotypical British Autumn (which, let's face it, seems to last most of the year).

I am especially excited about the corduroy collection for this season. I love cords! They are a recurrence for Autumn/Winter style and are a great alternative to leggings or jeans during the colder months.

When i first learnt of Aubin and Wills, the first thing i was drawn to was their blouses. Each season, this brand never fails to impress with their elegant editions. Recently, i've been noticing a lot of Peter Pan-type collars during the past few seasons, which is a great thing for me as it's a style i really like. Feminine, but yet with a slight masculine touch that smartens up any outfit.

Another thing that Aubin and Wills never fail to continually impress with, are the coat and jacket range for each season. Above i have shown two of my favourite items from the current range. The Threddingworth coat is the perfect camel coat and ideal for Autumn. Probably one of my most drawn to items of this range has to be the Tweenham blazer. This i absolutely adore! I am a big lover of tweed blazers and this is probably the best edition of this item i have seen. On the upper collar of this jacket, there is also some suede detailing. I really like this and i'm a big lover of mixing colours and textures, so this adds something a bit different to the average tweed blazer.

The dresses featured in this collection enhance further the good impression of this seasons collection. The Irby dress is a lovely alternative to the normal LBD and is very sophisticated whilst also being fashionable. The Derrington dress is a lovely day dress that can easily be dressed up and down.

I also featured pictures of a desert boot the brand have released for the season. The Webster dessert boots is ideal for Autumn and being available in two very nice shades, makes it easy to choose the shade to fit you. I am a lover of desert boots and so this edition, again shows me how fitting the brand is towards my personal style.

A classic piece to Aubin and Wills is always the signature fox jumper, avaliable for both men and women. The Welimeadow crow neck is a symbolism of the brand, however in a subtle way. This edition is constantly brought back into the collections and it's something i always find myself drawn to.

This brand being famous for it's good quality, sophisticated style and touches of up-to-date fashion. It never fails to impress me with it's collections and i always seem to find many (if not most things in the collection) that i like and find suited to my style. Though a little pricey, at least you know with this and the good reputation of the brand that the quality will be excellent. With this, all of the clothes are classic pieces that are generally wardrobe essentials on a constant cycle of being brought in and out of fashion, or in an ongoing state of being stylish.

I can safely say that many items from this collection i will have my eye on, and that i will be taking inspiration from the range for my Autumnal outfits.
As well as being one of my favourite models, Kate Moss's style is something i admire a lot. I love her simple but chic outfits and the slight grungy touch she gives to them. I really like the camel coat sighted in two of her looks above, and being a lover of the classic biker jacket myself, i really admire this too. I like the way her style varies, as seen above with her more grungy looks, to the simple LBD and camel coat, to the stylish lilac blazer.
Also, though it isn't really street style, I've added a picture of Kate's wedding dress. I absolutely loved this and thought it was so elegant. It's important to use the right products for your skin type and to keep skin clean. That's one of the sacrifices of wearing make-up - having to wash it off.

For nearly two years i have religiously been using the Clinique 3-Step system. I learnt about it from my Mum who also used to use and still continues to use some of the products from the range. I started off by purchasing the smaller 3-step kit. As advised by my Mum, i went for number 1 - for dry skin. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Clinique 3-Step system, there are many different types of system. These ranging from number 1 for dry skin all the way up to number 4 for very oily skin.

From first use of the kit i instantly loved it. It makes sure all traces of make-up are removed and leaves your skin feeling fresh and squeaky clean! The liquid facial soap is sensitive on the skin and doesn't dry it out whatsoever. The clarifying lotion helps to make sure that all make-up is removed and also gently exfoliates the skin. The Dramatically Different Moisturising lotion moisturises skin really well and is one of the best moisturisers i have ever used! The moisturiser is also really important to me as i do have dry skin and this one has never let me down.

Since using this first starter kit, i have gone through two more full sized kits and have continuously used this skin care system. I would agree that it is the best skin care routine i have ever used and in my opinion is definitely worth the money. For anyone interested in trying out this skin care system i would advise to try with the starter kit first to make sure that you do actually like the products before spending money on the full sized bottles.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12497718943998376566noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6144935453047505827.post-81562781706271512922012-08-16T12:36:00.002-07:002014-06-18T08:52:18.376-07:00Stila HD Beauty Balm Review

Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD beauty balm is only the second BB cream i myself have ever used. Normally, me being the product junkie that i am, before purchasing or trying out any new product, i tend to read reviews and research into it. However, with this one it was bought on a whim which is very unlike me. I knew vaugely of the Stila beauty balm and when i saw it i decided to buy it, seeing as i was eager to try more BB creams after trying the Garnier version.

Personally, i love the idea of BB creams. I like the idea that you can combine skin care with daily make-up. I think that it's important to look after your skin and i also love make-up, so BB creams make it very convenient to take care of my skin throughout the day. I also like my make-up to be minimalistic and i prefer to wear as little as possible. I think that this BB cream helps me to achieve this and leaves a barley there look.

At first impression i thought this cream was a little too dark for my very pale skin, however it was lighter than the Garnier one and i could manage to get away with it if i didn't wear powder on top, which is not really a problem as i find that this BB cream gives a really nice glowy finish and does not appear shiny. As i usually do with most foundations etc, i mixed this with a moisturiser and this made the colour paler and the consistency thinner.

I tend to have a habit of mixing my cream bases with moisturiser for a number of reasons. To begin with, i like to wear an SPF every day on my skin, and this product unfortunately does not contain one which i was a little disappointed with at first but once mixed with a moisturiser containing SPF, this problem was solved. Also, my skin is quite dry, so it is important for me to wear a face make up that moisturises and so adding a moisturiser to my face products insures this. The moisturiser i tend to use for this is Boots Simply Sensitive Day Moisturiser with SPF 15.

These are the benefits stated on the back of the box:-

Luxurious beauty balm glides onto skin and leaves a silky, powdery finish

High-definition formula helps reduce pore size and provides oil and blemish control

Contains innovative micro spheres, which have been shown to hide skin imperfections and reduce wrinkle depth by up to 84%

Features an exclusive complex, which helps reduce redness and skin irritation

Enriched with Tripeptide-37, bamboo and pea extracts, which help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Infused with natural, skin-protecting emollients which have been shown to increase anti-oxidant activity by up to 89.7%

Uses the smallest particle size of coated pigments for seamless, smooth coverage

Ideal for all skin types and skin tones

Oil-free, paraben-free and dermatologist tested

All in all i do have to say that i was impressed with this product. I now wear it as my daily base and i feel that it does last all day on the skin.
